Hydraform - a South African company with head office in Johannesburg and 1400m² manufacturing premises in the coastal town of Durban for ease of export has been at the forefront of soil-cement technology.
Hydraform's Patented ISSB machines produce the innovative Interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks (ISSBs) also known as Interlocking Compressed Earth Blocks(ICEBs) that are made from compressed mixed sifted soil, water, 10% portland cement and other additives. Typically, around 3,000 psi (21 MPa) is applied in compression, and the original soil volume is reduced by about half.
The blocks are designed to withstand the rigours of the harsh African climate, and the seismic occurrences that sometimes reduce traditional brick-and-mortar buildings to a pile of rubble. Hydraform buildings are designed to withstand earthquakes, storms and a wide range of weather conditions.
Hydraform Building System Benefits
1 square meter uses only thirty-seven (37) blocks. A 5 sq.mtr wall will only consume one (1) bag of cement and three (3) bags of fine sand. Cost of Labor is lesser because semi-skilled construction labour is required. Two (2) masons and three (3) labourers can finish a 6m X 8m bungalow house in 20 days
Speed of Construction
The simplicity of construction ensures that building with the Hydraform building system is faster than the conventional method. One semi-skilled labourer can lay an average of 5 sq.mtr per day. Erection of walls using Hydraform blocks require unskilled labour under minimum skilled supervision
Quality of Product
The standard Hydraform blocks have a faced-brick finish and because they are interlocking, straight walls are easily achieved. If plastering is applied the straight walls require less plaster than conventional walls. Since the main ingredient is compressed soil, the Hydraform Blocks has the highest thermal quality of all conventional building materials.
